In California- an Optometrist's scope of practice (when properly certfied by the State Board) includes the ability to diagnose, and treat many common eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, allergic reactions, styes, lid infections and viral infections, peripheral corneal foreign body removalsdry eyes and primary open angle glaucoma. The Optometrist acts as the entry point in eyecare and typically performs the general eye examinations. This would include the refraction portion of the exam which determines the patients glasses prescription, eye teaming, visual skills, eye health evaluations and recommendations. They typically will fit contact lenses, and perform visual therapy for eye imbalances or learning disorders. The Optometrist will usually also provide for spectacle prescriptions as well as provide the actual spectacles. If the patient has a condition that requires surgery (other than peripheral foreign bodies or eye lash epilation), secondary glaucoma or an eye condition outside the scope of practice of Optometry a referral with an Ophthalmologist will be arranged, Depending upon the eye conditions or findings of the examinations referrals to Neurology, Internist or other Health Care Provider could also be required.
